If you know Buby, you know FOOD is very important to him. He rises in the a.m. chanting "EAT," "EAT." So what he puts in his belly is very important to me. People think I'm Mean Mama when they offer him a cookie, a donut, a chip, a sugar drink or french fry, and I won't let him have it. No way. I relented just twice to avoid embarrassing the other person. Yes, I realize I'm the girl who eats Smarties and chocolate-covered peanuts in her office all hours of the night. But he's not even 2 yet!! It's my job to make sure he gets a good start, and there's no reason to put junk in a growing body. That said, he eats a lot of cuisine a la Daddy on weekends, loves diner pancakes {no syrup}, can't get enough of his grandmothers' homemade apple sauces when they visit, will order grilled cheese in a restaurant, and enjoys a homemade vanilla soft ice cream cone once a while on our family outings.
What he gets at home is mostly organic and/or all natural. He loves his fruit like most kids, so that's where he gets his natural sugars. He drinks two glasses of unsweetened organic soy milk a day, and the rest is water. Buby's gastronomic cravings include: egg white omelets with spinach and cheese, zucchini pancakes, cold veggie rotini with cucumbers and strawberries and a touch of balsamic vinegar, whole wheat bagels {toasted or untoasted and plain}, organic popcorn rice cakes, cheese, cereal, tomatoes, and plain waffles in the toaster. He's getting picky about frozen veggies, like most 2s, but he will still eat peas, carrots and corn. NO GREEN BEANS! And lately, he spits the broccoli back out.
Things he'll beg for if left in plain sight include: Health Valley organic cereal bars {strawberry or apple cobbler}, Benzel's all-natural Pennystick pretzels, Kashi's 7 grain crackers, garlic croutons {I know, weird}, and Gerber's new fruit strips {really the worst thing he gets--he calls them "SURPRISE," because I keep them in my purse for emergencies and that's what I called it the first time I gave him one}. Here are a few of his favorite bites at 23 months!

Wow. I admire your steadfastness (is that even a word?) to maintaining only healthy stuff. We try our best, but my girl has a sweet tooth. Like her Mama. Have you tried nuts or peanut butter yet? We haven't. I'd like to hold off another year, but we'll see. Keep up the good work. I certainly don't think you're a Mean Mama!
No nuts or peanut butter, not yet. We wanted to wait until he was at least 2. I used to love PB&J sandwiches, and I've been looking for a no-sugar-added jelly for when that time comes. None in my grocery. Smuckers is loaded with stuff, but that's what I eat myself.
I am in awe of your mothering and apologize if I ever made you feel like you were a mean mommy. Buby is certainly healthy and very loved, who could ask for more... Keep up the good work and I will refrain from offering french fries when he eats off my plate. Love you all!
