Inspire

I cannot wait to get my hands on this new book. Maybe My Sweets will wrap it up for the holidays? I've poured over Domino {the magazine} cover-to-cover since its premiere issue. Once upon a time it was a major rival in the world of design mags, but even then I secretly wanted to abandon my ship and jump aboard theirs. If they'd have me in all of their fabulousness. Finally the editors poured all that inspiration + information into a single full-size reference.

In Bookstores...

I worked very hard on this book published by Clarkson Potter. It's at Barnes & Noble and Borders now. Yippie!

So Lovely

A recent project of mine appears in the November/December issue of Martha Stewart's Blueprint magazine. I just received my contributor copies yesterday. Congrats to the editors of Blueprint for another fabulous issue!

Glossies, Part II

The other day I shared my fave baby/kid mags. Here are the shelter pubs I read. Yes, there are many. It was easier when I was on staff and enjoyed them all for free! Now as freelance, I don't buy every one every month, but shelter and design is my industry, so I have to keep up with what everyone else is doing. Sometimes I get real cozy at Barnes & Noble when the new issues hit newsstands and just leave with my favorites. Most of the mags have superb interactive sites and blogs, so check them out.

Glossies, Part I

I just love how magazines feel in my hands. How they mix timely and timeless, information and inspiration, know-how and questions. How they keep me company on every plane and train ride during my lifetime. How I can find one last-minute on every corner in NYC. How they can be saved or recycled and pages torn out for various filing in binders. How they are forever changing, always competitive, and fighting so hard for your attention in a world saturated with media and Blackberries and back-to-back meetings. I love that I work in magazines and have a legit excuse to sit and read anything I want. Research. My list of favorites is long. My list of guaranteed reads is short. Here are my baby and toddler publications. Baby Couture is new... fancied the premiere issue. Fit Pregnancy I got hooked on while prego with Buby. I used to read every issue, back-to-front, at my drs. appointments. It's good long after baby arrives. The best part: Each of these mags has a totally awesome website you can get lost in, so check them out.

The Gift Show

I covered the International Gift Fair this week as I do every year. What is it? An insanely ginormous biannual exhibition at the Javitz Center in NYC that attracts more than 40,000 buyers from around the world. It's not open to the public, only registered wholesalers, retailers and editors. More than 2,300 vendors display, and I've heard there's a 3+ year waiting list. The show should take 3 days. But I'm a FAST talker and even FASTER walker who knows what she likes, so I squeezed it all into 10 nonstop hours racing the floor and chatting it up with select artists and business people who work with products that I deem smart, original, cool, or just plain beautiful. I wouldn't slow down for any booth that didn't have the WOW FACTOR. It isn't all pretty. But the good stuff is REALLY good and makes up for the rest. I'm in pain now, as I dragged a 200-pound suitcase {full of press kits} four avenues over, six blocks down, four flights down stairs at Penn Station, another two down a nonworking escalator at Secaucus, and onto my train where I met up with my Sweets. So when I recover, I will share my fabulous finds for kids with you here at Buby's Place.
