This tradition began for us on December 1, 2008. I was inspired by the sensational scrapbooker behind Savoring the Details. Thanks again, Melissa! On the eve of December 1st I stayed up wrapping 24 books. Christmas books we already had upstairs in a cabinet with other holiday-themed tomes. I covered all of the books in the same pretty paper with the exception of "The Night Before Christmas."
Now we jumpstart our afternoons with the book basket. Buby choses any ONE he wants one our way down to lunch. Or earlier, on days he just can't stand to wait. I love to watch his decision process. Right now every book is like new to him, because he doesn't remember but a few of them from last year. But when he + Bleu are older, they will have such fun trying to figure out which one is which. And I hope, look forward to snuggling up and reading their favorite titles with Mom + Dad. This small act will remind us always to take time out to sit and read as a family.
Here's the holiday titles we just happened to have here for the basket:
- Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer by Random House and Linda Karl
- Alvin and the Chipmunks' A Chipmunk Christmas by Ross Bagdasarian and Janice Karman
- Olive, the Other Reindeer by J. Otto Seibold and Vivian Walsh
- Snowmen at Night by Caralyn Buehner
- The Story of Christmas by Patricia A. Pingry
- Frosty the Snowman by Jack Rollins and Steve Nelson
- Tomie's Little Christmas Pageant by Domie DePaola

- The First Christmas by Gill Guile

I LOVE this idea. I'm crazy about children's books and we definitely do this here, too. Here's one for you to add to your collection: The Jolly Postman Christmas. It's adorable. You'll love the little envelopes and notes tucked inside. The original Jolly Postman is one of my favorites, too. This a cute tradition you've started for your little ones and I'm positive they'll look forward to it every year. Thanks for sharing.
Ok that's a very cute idea! I'm going to have to remember that when I have kids. Thanks for the idea!
what a great idea. i just realised we have no xmas books in the house at all.
Thanks, I'll check out the Jolly Postman.
Also, for Peata, you can get a whole lot of holiday books at once with McGraw-Hill's "Santa's Little Library of Christmas Stories." It's a box set of 12 mini books and Buby loves them.
i love that my grandbabies love books .. me too!! this is a really cute idea .. i will have to remember to pass it along to others
