I'm not a yard sale person. I love hearing about other people's fabulous finds, but I myself don't shop them + don't host them. I feel weird pulling into a stranger's driveway and even weirder rummaging through their junk... while they watch. Inevitably I conclude their taste is not my taste and I have to pivot my way out of there with the congenial "Thank you, have a great day." Followed by the all-eyes-on-me walk of shame back to my car. Plus, I have not mastered the art of negotiation, I don't carry much cash on me, I'm a bit of a germ phobe, and I rarely go anywhere without both kids and the mother of all strollers. My idea of a deal is finding a Dash & Albert rug half price at Home Goods or snagging vintage fashion sketches from a local antique shop.
Well. Saturday's "Village-Wide Yard Sale" won me over. We had the most relaxing time. After some PJ playtime and cinnamon buns and iced coffee {for me + My Sweets}, our family took a sunny October stroll around the hood. There were A LOT of sellers and even more buyers, so we could be sort of anonymous in all of it. I liked that. I think I found some of the cutest things on the planet, Buby had fun, Bleu napped the entire time, and everything fit snugly in our stroller basket. I really really love every item, and I didn't spend more than $2 at any one sale.

Glad you found some treasures. I have saved some major $$$$ (especially on baby toys!) and personally love the thrill of the hunt. I do agree with the uncomfortable "Sorry I don't want anything" feeling when I'm the only shopper but the mega sales I am addicted to!
Yeah, I'm right there with ya, I'd rather go for the big sales at a store than dig through a persons personals :)
Wow! You did well! I agree with you, it can be a little weird.
I never have any luck and I always feel the same way about leaving empty handed. My aunt has the best luck of anyone I've ever met (she got the tunnels for us). I've started just telling her what we need, she loves to have something specific to look for.
I frequent yard sales, community garage sales, twins sales and thrift stores. Not only do I find the nicest items, cheap, I also find superb treasures. It's rare that I don't. Last summer I stumbled upon a gorgeous house selling upscale size 8 boys clothing for a $1 a piece!
Twins sales are great because everything is organized by sex and size...so easy to browse. I stumbled upon two brand new baby bjorn potty seats for $5 a piece!
I could go on and on about the deals I have found throughout the years and cannot tell you how worth it is is when you find something perfect. Well, I guess you know now!
I usually have a sale every summer and with moving this year, we cleared out a lot of things...$1600 worth!
The kids love it too. We go on Friday's during the summer and I give them each $5 and you would not believe the treasure they find and how selective they are. Grace once stumbled on a huge, organized box of craft items (beads, feathers, jewelry supplies, foam stickies). It was loaded and we still use it....for $0.50!
I can't think of one reason why anyone would not shop second hand, especially in this economy! It's the highest form of recycling in a world where everyone thinks that much of what they have is disposable!
Thrift on!
