The Canvas

His biggest work of art yet. Buby + I were at the store earlier in the week shopping for a canvas. I picked up this one at 24"x36" and wondered, "Hmm, is this too big?" Buby responded, "I NEED IT." I think he favors canvas over paper because it stands up on his easel so well. After he tweaked his answer to "I WANT IT, PLEASE," we had a deal and left. Early the next morning Buby asked if he could paint. I pulled out the canvas and he said, "OH, MAMA, IT'S TOO BIG." Laughter ensued. I said "You can make any painting as small or as big as you want, honey." An hour and a half {2 shades of blue, 1 green, and 1 yellow} later, Buby's masterpiece was finished. I just sat on a stool watching him do his thing with a case of wipes at the ready. {The acrylic he chose is much splashier than other paints.} What I love about Buby's abstract painting is that it is so pure. Of course, that sounds ridiculous because he's 2.5. Everything a 2 year old does is pure. But he really resists all direction in these creative pursuits, and that's cool. He's got a "I know what I'm doing" attitude about it, like he can see the final product before he even starts. And he always seems to know when a piece is finished. He decisively declares, "I'M DONE" and stands up. Just once I suggested that he might want to move on to another spot so he didn't paint a hole right into the canvas. He turned to me and said, "NO, MOMMY. IT LOOKS BEAUTIFUL... JUST LIKE THIS." He was right. It did. And I didn't say another word.
