Turtle Crossing

Buby & Co. was walking on the sidewalk the other day when Daddy noticed a big old, super slow turtle in the middle of our road. The three of us oohed and aahed, as we'd never seen a turtle this size in our village. Odd timing considering Buby's Granny DJ just gave him his first stuffed turtle {from Starbucks} the day before. And we just saw turtles at the Bronx Zoo. Are the turtles trying to tell us something? When we reminded Buby what it was, he declared "TURTOL." I was afraid the cute fella--with his blend-in shell--would be hit by a car, so Daddy nudged him with his foot across the street and onto the grass. Then I thought, "What if Mr. V. doesn't see and hits him with the lawn mower?" So we decided we'd walk to the coffee shop and see the turtle again on our way back. But 10 minutes later, he was gone. No way he got away that fast! So there it is... the turtle mystery.

Do you know what snapping turtles look like? Please, don't touch them. They can snap through bones. My brother-in-law is a turtle FANATIC! Ask me about him one day. There are huge snappers at the lake where I grew up. They look like old dinosaurs. I've seen them where they are 3-4 feet wide.

I don't, but thanks for the warning. I actually forgot when we were nudging this turtle along the road with Tom's shoe that they can be dangerous. I better look at a pic online incase we see him again.

Snapping turtles have a sharp beak and often times, the shell is bumpy. Please, beware!
