Saturday morning Buby & Co. road-tripped to an arts festival on the Delaware River. The environs were even prettier than anticipated. Exactly the kind of place where you would want to go fishing, eat lunch, and just chill. So that's what we did. I'm so happy my little Canon fits in my pocket. There were a lot of things I wanted to remember about the day. First we perused the various vendors to the tune of a youngish male opera singer. It was soothing and jazzy. I scored a gorgeous handmade winter scarf for only $10. {Some women are shoe-obsessed. Scarves are my thing... I miss them all summer.} The knitting artist loved Buby and talked about a grandson the same age. {Ever since Buby, it seems we are a magnet for grandparents everywhere.}
My Sweets and I found a tasty looking steakhouse in town and devoured two identical steak and provolone sandwiches on toasted garlic bread with onions and mushrooms. I mean these babies put all previously devoured steak sandwiches to shame. All 3,457 of them since college. Buby picked away at his pickle and had a few bites of grilled cheese. We ran into two of Buby's little guy friends in that restaurant, both of whom are in Buby's music class. Strange, since we all live in different towns, none of which was this town.
After lunch we walked more of this river village which had a certain industrial charm about it. The railroad track runs right through, and--lucky for us-- a "CHOO-CHOO" came in just as we approached. Buby signaled, and the conductor honked. He was completely in awe of the real-life Thomas the Train. We like our Thomas books.
We headed toward a playground next. Buby is a sucker for slides, and we are suckers for Buby. Later we trekked down to the rocky river's edge. Buby wouldn't put his feet in the water no matter how many times I compared it to a really big puddle. So I flipped off my shoes and carried him out to the middle.
Then we were off in search of an old-fashioned ice creamery and fudge shop the locals rave about. We were full from lunch, but the thought of 55 flavors of homemade milkshakes was too much to resist. Two worth-every-penny milkshakes and a glass of cold water later, we were out of there. My Sweets drove a scenic route home on his motorcycle while Buby and I drove the most direct route so that he could get home and nap.
The nap never happened, but after a couple of relaxing hours in Buby Land playing with cars and reading books, we grabbed our hoodies, popped some popcorn and were off for Buby's first ever drive-in. The movie was "Shrek." We laid our blanket on the grassy hill with a ton of other families. The parks people passed out glow-in-the-dark necklaces. It was the perfect night temperature. The sky dark with bright pinks stripes woven through the clouds. Buby spotted our neighbor friends Robyn and Allison, and from that point he would have nothing to do with our blanket. He wanted to sit in Robyn's lap and eat Robyn's food. He lasted until about 10pm (so so past bedtime) when we headed home. Weekends rock.
