Today is my dad's birthday. Buby's grandfather, who he excitedly refers to as "BOMPOW." The two of them exchange knuckle sandwiches and vroom-vroom noises over the phone several times a week. Buby loves his Bompow dearly. I recently discovered these photos in the banker's boxes my mom brought with her to Buby Land. Kinda groovy.
My dad enlisted in the Marines when he was 17. He grew up with 5 brothers and 2 sisters, so he was in a hurry to get out on his own. He looks so much like my brother Mark here. Tall. Skinny. Serious eyes. It occurs to me that Bompow has done just about everything cool in Buby's book. And literally, in his books. Bompow is like the real-life main character in Buby's train, construction, and car tomes. Right now Buby only knows that he drives a motorcycle, and that is WAY more than enough. But Bompow has also...
- Driven a dump truck
- Conducted a passenger train
- Raced cars on a real track
- Operated a bulldozer
- Mowed some ginormous lawns (Buby likes lawn mowers)
- Climbed the tallest trees
- Road a donkey
Now that should elevate him to Super Hero status.

I love this post. The pictures are precious. Your Dad sounds like a great guy. Happy Birthday to him!
Happy Birthday Bompow .. I know Gavin was very impressed when he read his Chuck the Dump Truck books and I told him you had once had one. He would point and say your name with a smile on his face.
May this be the best day yet!!!
