Susan Verlander's "Good Night, Country" is a wonderful selection and companion book to her "Wake Up City," which I hope to read to Buby someday.
There's nothing like sleeping in the country with the windows open and the cool night breeze slipping through the screens... prancing in the air above your bed. We had a taste of early summer on this sunny Sunday, and it left us wanting more. Perhaps the scent of the season is that much sweeter since our city-dweller days of paper-thin walls, screaming babies (not our own), no closets, smelly dark subway tunnels, honking cabs, crowded laundromats, sidewalk speed walking, and sticky stairwells! Oh, the stairwells. Don't get me wrong, the city had its moments. 7 years of unforgettable moments. It didn't have the trees or grass or fresh air, but we loved it when we loved it. The country is undeniably sweet to Buby. Today Buby & I followed a bumble bee through a field full of bright yellow dandelions. Lovely dandelions. Some weeds really don't deserve to be weeds, you know? We shared a homemade bagel and rode the red wagon around town counting all the trees with voluptuous pink blossoms... thousands of blossoms that weren't there even one day ago. We rolled in the grass, shot some hoops, pet a neighbor's dog, and just enjoyed the air we breathed. Buby will sleep well tonight and wake up to the delightful chirps of birds outside his window.
